Young diplomats discuss the future of EU-GCC relations with the EU Special Representative for the Gulf Region at the College of Europe
From 6 to 10 October, young diplomats from the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the GCC Secretariat-General took part in a tailor-made training programme on EU Foreign Policy at the College of Europe in Bruges. Designed to foster dialogue and mutual understanding, the initiative brought together young diplomats from the GCC and their European counterparts to strengthen the growing partnership between the two regions.
Parts of the programme were held jointly with participants of the European Union Diplomatic Academy and the EU Diplomatic Programme for the Enlargement Region, creating a unique forum for intercultural exchange and cooperation among future diplomatic leaders.
A highlight of the week was a discussion on the future of EU-GCC relations with Luigi Di Maio, EU Special Representative for the Gulf region. He emphasised that “the more we strengthen the EU-GCC partnership, the better we will be able to address multilateral challenges in the world.” The conversation, also attended by H.E. Ambassador Fahad Aljaimaz, Head of the GCC Delegation to the EU, provided participants with valuable insights into current priorities and opportunities for collaboration between the EU and the GCC.
Throughout the week, participants engaged in a rich programme that included an EEAS fireside chat, lectures on EU Foreign and Security Policy, and interactive workshops such as intercultural communication and a simulation of negotiations with the European Council.
By building bridges between GCC and European diplomats, this initiative not only enhances mutual understanding but also contributes to the long-term strengthening of EU-GCC relations and cooperation.
