Frank Schimmelfennig is Professor of European Politics and a member of the Center for Comparative and International Studies at ETH Zurich. He is also a member of the Research Council of the Swiss National Science Foundation, an Associate of the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute, and Chairman of the Scientific Board of Institut für Europäische Politik Berlin. 

His research focuses on European integration and, more specifically, integration theory, EU enlargement and Europeanization, differentiated integration, as well as democracy promotion and democratization beyond the state. In 2021, he won an ERC Advanced Grant for a project on “Bordering Europe: Boundary Formation in European Integration” (EUROBORD). He also leads a work package in the Horizon collaborative project “Invigorating Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy for a Resilient Europe” (InvigoratEU), and is a member of the Research Unit “Reconfiguring Europe: Between Competence and Control” (funded by the German Research Foundation).

His most recent books are “Ever Looser Union? Differentiated European Integration” (Oxford University Press, 2020, with Thomas Winzen), “The Rise of International Parliaments. Strategic Legitimation in International Organizations” (Oxford University Press, 2020, with Thomas Winzen, Tobias Lenz, Jofre Rocabert, Loriana Crasnic, Cristina Gherasimov, Jana Lipps and Densua Mumford) and “Integration and Differentiation in the European Union. Theory and Policies” (Palgrave, 2022, with Dirk Leuffen and Berthold Rittberger). In 2024, he received an honorary doctoral degree of the University of Aalborg (Denmark) for his work on European integration.
