• 1966: Magister artium at the University of Hamburg in French literature.
• 1965 - 1972: Member of the Paris office of the German Academic Exchange Service; lecturer for German and German politics at Institut d’Etudes Politiques and Ecole Nationale d’Administration.
• 1972: Doctorate in sociology under the direction of Pierre Bourdieu.
• 1972-2002: Director of the  Franco-German Institute in Ludwigsburg
• 1976 - 1995: Member of the Board of Governors of the European Cultural Foundation in Amsterdam; since 1976 president of the Executive Committee, since 1978 vicepresident of the Foundation.
• 1974 - 1994: Visiting professor of sociology at the universities of Paris-Asnières, Bologna, Hagen
• Since 1990: Professor of “sociology of international relations” at the University of Hagen.
• Since 1988: Visiting Professor of European sociology at the College of Europe
• Since 1994: Professor of European sociology and Director of the Programme of European General and Interdisciplinary Studies at the College of Europe in Bruges.
• 1997-1999: Chair BBL-Léo Moulin of European Studies
• Since 2000: Chair Hendrik Brugmans for European Interdisciplinary Studies
