The Limits of EU Integration Through Law? The Foundations Revisited: a landmark conference at the College of Europe

On March 27th and 28th, 2025, we had the pleasure of hosting “The Limits of EU Integration Through Law? The Foundations Revisited”, a joint anniversary conference organized by our European Legal Studies Department in collaboration with the European Law Review. This landmark event celebrated the College’s 75th anniversary and the European Law Review’s 50th anniversary, bringing together leading legal scholars, practitioners, academic assistants, and students to engage in a discussion on the evolution and limits of the European Union’s legal order.

With a full room in attendance, the panel discussions explored the relevance of the foundational doctrines of EU law, the EU’s evolving social dimension, and its relationship with liberal democracy. At a time of unprecedented challenges for the European Union, the conference provided a timely opportunity to reflect on the significance of these legal concepts in the broader process of European integration and their continued relevance in addressing contemporary challenges.

A heartfelt thank you to our European Legal Studies Department for organizing this timely event, and to all the speakers for contributing to the discussion with their insights and expertise: Inge GOVAERE, Panos KOUTRAKOS, Sacha GARBEN, Michal BOBEK, Sacha PRECHAL, Bruno DE WITTE, Allan ROSAS, Eugenia DUMITRIU-SEGNANA, Paul CRAIG, Luke Dimitrios SPIEKER, Abel VIDIL, Esin  KÜÇÜK, Catherine BARNARD, Iyiola SOLANKE, Alexander KORNEZOV, Paul NEMITZ, Sara IGLESIAS SANCHEZ, Eleanor SPAVENTA, Margherita BRANCA, Menelaos MARKAKIS, Steve WEATHERILL, Vilija VĖLYVYTĖ, Niamh NIC SHUIBHNE, Laurence GORMLEY, Imelda MAHER, Jukka SNELL, Marta VÁZQUEZ LERENA, Jo SHAW, Gráinne DE BÚRCA, Freddy DREXLER, Ben SMULDERS, Isabelle VAN DAMME, and Justine COUDRON.
