Successful conclusion of the third Africa-EU Competition Week

The third Africa-EU Competition Week took place from 23rd to 27th September 2024 at the College of Europe in Bruges (Belgium) and in Brussels at the European Commission’s Directorate General for Competition.

This forum, now at its third edition, offers a relevant opportunity for the exchange of experiences between the competition regimes at the national and regional level across Africa and those of the European Commission and the EU Member States. The discussions contributed to an increased awareness and understanding of different approaches to competition challenges and their contexts between the EU and Africa.

Organised in collaboration with the European Commission, the Africa-EU Week on Competition Policy consisted of in-person lectures, workshops and seminars delivered by EU and African speakers and was held in English and French. The event focused on the assessment of key competition practices and their underlying legal frameworks.

The Competition Week gathered over 40 officials from both African national and regional competition authorities, as well as related government bodies.

The event combined plenary sessions, panels and workshops covering a wide range of topics, including competition economics, vertical restraints, market studies, abuse of dominance, cartels and Mergers.

On 24th September participants visited DG Competition in Brussels where they were welcomed by the Director General, Olivier Guersent.

Other guest speakers of the Competition Week were the President of the Portugues Competition Authority, Nuno Cunha Rodrigues; the Director of Strategy and Policy of DG Competition, Inge Bernaerts; the Acting Director-General of the Competition Authority of Kenya, Adano W. Roba; the Head of the Competition and Consumer Policies Branch at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Teresa Moreira.

With this event, the European Commission and African competition authorities continue to develop the platform that was created in the first Africa-EU Competition Week in 2022. The objective is to encourage information exchange and discussions on competition law and policy.
