20th edition of “Negotiations in Practice” successfully held at the College of Europe
Last week, the College of Europe successfully organised the 20th edition of its renowned “Negotiations in Practice” training course. This year, participants from diverse backgrounds, including private organisations and public authorities, came together to enhance their negotiation skills and drive meaningful change.
The training was divided into two parts, offering a comprehensive approach to mastering negotiation strategies.
The first part focused on international political and diplomatic negotiation processes. Participants explored techniques for defending the interests of a country, organisation, or company. Key topics included lobbying, networking, and coalition-building, followed by sessions on communication skills aimed at delivering effective and convincing presentations.
The second half of the programme concentrated on the unique challenges and dynamics of negotiations within the European Union. A special emphasis was placed on the workings of the Council of the EU. Participants engaged in a full-day simulation exercise replicating a real legislative and political issue debated within the EU. The morning session simulated COREPER (the Committee of Permanent Representatives), while the afternoon replicated a Council meeting.
Thanks to real-world case studies, role-playing exercises, and insights from top negotiators, participants got invaluable insights into the EU’s decision-making processes and enhanced their ability to secure successful outcomes in high-stakes environments.
