Introductory Course

The Department of European Political and Governance Studies offers an online introductory course for students who do not have a background in European studies or politics. This online programme takes place before the official start of the academic year (July-August) and covers key concepts that will be crucial throughout the academic year. For some students the attendance of these courses is mandatory.

Moreover, all students, except for native French speakers (C2 level), are required to complete an online placement test provided by the Alliance Française (Evalang).

The results of this test will complement their application file and help determine appropriate language group placement for the intensive French course, which will take place on campus from 26 August to 5 September 2025. Students required to attend this free course will be contacted by the Department with registration details and further instructions. They are expected to arrive in Bruges on 25 August 2025.

In addition, students whose French level is below B2—or those simply wishing to improve—will have the opportunity to follow a suitable French language course throughout the academic year. Monday mornings are reserved for this within the POL academic programme.
